Cancer Dog Dave: nine months

Dave was my 9 and a half year old rescue Boston Terrier. He was from a puppymill originally, and met none of the AKC standards for a Boston - he was tall and muscular, but had that Boston personality through and through.

Dave was diagnosed with stage Vb lymphosarcoma on January 29th, 2008. The prognosis, assuming chemo was successful, was nine months - October 2008. He quickly went into remission, and was a trooper through his five months of weekly chemo treatment. He remained in remission until September 22, 2008, when we were informed that the cancer had returned. We decided to treat with the combination of holistics, Prednisone and love, and he was given a two month prognosis. At that time, he was alive and well, and continued that way for many more months. Dave crossed the rainbow bridge on May 11th.

nine months

Today is exactly nine months from Dave's first chemo treatment. His discharge paperwork said that he'd come out of remission about four months after a full course of chemo, which lasted five months. In reality, it was less than three months, and that didn't include the hope of the vaccine trial. Throughout the entire time, I had in my head "nine months, nine months." Nine months is here, and he's still with us, doing well and not seeming sick at all, and that makes me a happy person.

And, he got to see the Phillies win the World Series! Now that is exciting!
